Illa del Sec briefing
About this site
Illa del Sec is an isolated islet in the Bay of Palma, off the Calvià coast, reachable only by boat. What makes it special is that the deeper part holds sunken fishing boats: the "Clara" rests at 18 m and the "Regina Maris" at 29 m. Near the Clara there is also a large anchor from a tourist submarine.
The appeal of the site is that it offers several different routes from the same mooring. The north face starts on a platform at around 7 m and gains depth gradually to about 18 m, which puts it within reach of an Open Water diver. The south face is the one that really drops, down to the 29-30 m of the Regina Maris, and it is where the current shows up, so that version is kept for Advanced divers with good air consumption.
The bottom alternates between overgrown rock, sand and patches of Posidonia seagrass. You regularly run into schools of barracuda, groupers, moray eels, octopuses, scorpionfish, pompano, amberjack, damselfish, salema and nudibranchs. Centres in Palma and Santa Ponsa usually pair it with the wrecks at the Dique del Oeste on a two-dive trip, leaving Illa del Sec for the second dive as the shallower of the two.
The wrecks are dived from the outside: this is not a penetration dive and there is no reason to go inside the hulls.
