About this site
Es Colomer is the uninhabited islet you see from the viewpoint on the Formentor road, between Cala Sant Vicenç and the headland. Underwater a huge tunnel runs right through it: the mouth starts at around 3 m and the floor of the passage reaches 18 m, so you cross the whole island from the inside.
Coming out the other side the scenery changes at once. You go from enclosed rock to the open blue of the north face, where a school of barracuda is often hunting. From there the bottom steps down over broken rock to the sand at around 35-40 m, and that drop is what forces you to keep the profile tightly controlled.
That combination —an overhead passage, an exit into the blue and a bottom that invites you deeper— is why centres keep it for experienced divers. It is not a technical dive, but it is one where it is easy to end up deeper than planned if the plan is not clear.
The north face is exposed to the tramontana sea, so the site is only dived with a good weather window.
