Cova del Cap Gros briefing
About this site
The Cova del Cap Gros lies between the mouth of Port de Sóller and the cape crowned by the lighthouse, and local centres rate it as one of the best dives in the north of Mallorca. It has the advantage of being right next to the harbour: a few minutes' run and you are there.
The mooring sits over 9-10 m, which means the dive can be run at different levels on the same spot. The feature it is named after is the cave mouth: you go in a few metres and, turning back towards the exit, you get the classic cut-out of intense blue light against dark rock, which is the shot everyone comes here for.
For advanced divers there is a second, deeper draw: a large old anchor, petrified and overgrown, resting at 27 m. That section already calls for control of depth and air consumption.
The rest of the route is rock covered in settled life, and visibility in the area is generally good. Being at the harbour mouth, you have to allow for boat traffic: surface marker buoy and a controlled ascent.
