About this site

Cap de Formentor closes Mallorca off to the north, and it is one of those places where the landscape above water carries on just as vertically below it. The dive starts in the corridor formed by two walls; you follow the right-hand one and arches and cave mouths appear at different depths, with the sand bottom at around 40 m and sections dropping to 50.

The water here is a dark blue you do not see in the south of the island, and the marine life matches: octopuses, spiny lobsters, conger eels, moray eels, groupers and schools of tuna or barracuda passing through the blue. There is coral and gorgonian in the deeper, shaded parts.

This is not a site to improvise on. The depth calls for a deep diving certification, and the cape is one of the most exposed spots on the island: a northerly builds a sea in no time and the current can round the point hard. The centres in Pollença and Alcúdia only schedule it with a good weather window and with divers who have already done deep dives with them.

It combines well with the other sites off the Formentor headland —Illa de Formentor, es Colomer, Cap de Catalunya— on full-day trips.
